Cameroon’s Minister of Secondary Education, Nalova Lyonga, has expressed strong anger and concern following a violent incident at Nkolbisson Bilingual High School, where two students engaged in a serious physical fight. The incident has raised questions about school safety, discipline, and the broader environment in Cameroonian educational institutions.
According to eyewitness reports, the fight broke out in the school courtyard during recess. The altercation quickly escalated, leaving both students injured and requiring immediate medical attention. Staff intervened to separate the students, but the incident has sparked unrest among pupils and concerned parents.
Local authorities confirmed that the school administration has opened an internal investigation to determine the cause of the fight and whether any other students were involved or encouraged the violence.
Minister Nalova Lyonga condemned the behavior in strong terms, describing it as “unacceptable and damaging to the reputation of our schools.” In a statement released shortly after the incident, she emphasized that Cameroon’s schools must remain safe spaces for learning and personal development.
“Violence has no place in our schools. We will take all necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” Nalova Lyonga said.
She also urged teachers, parents, and students to work together to promote respect, discipline, and conflict resolution.
This incident has reignited debates about discipline in Cameroonian schools, especially in bilingual and urban institutions where student populations are dense. Education experts argue that frequent fights and behavioral issues may indicate deeper systemic problems, including inadequate counseling services, insufficient supervision, and rising tensions among adolescents.
Parents and community leaders have called for stricter enforcement of school rules, while some suggest implementing peer mediation programs and anger management workshops to help students resolve conflicts non-violently.
The Ministry of Secondary Education is expected to release new guidelines for school safety and student discipline in the coming weeks. Schools across the country are being reminded to reinforce monitoring during recess and to create clear reporting mechanisms for any violent incidents.
Additionally, authorities are considering workshops for teachers on conflict resolution and student behavioral management, aiming to prevent future incidents and foster a safer learning environment.
Social media in Cameroon quickly reacted to the news, with many expressing concern over school safety. Some parents criticized the school administration for failing to anticipate such fights, while others called on fellow students to exercise responsibility and respect.
The fight at Nkolbisson Bilingual High School serves as a reminder that maintaining discipline and safety in schools is a shared responsibility. With Minister Nalova Lyonga’s intervention, authorities hope to implement stricter safety measures and create programs that encourage peaceful resolution of conflicts.
As Cameroon’s educational institutions navigate these challenges, the government and communities will need to work hand-in-hand to ensure that schools remain safe, nurturing environments for learning and growth.
