Tension Gradually Easing in Senegal after 72 Hours of Violence
Senegal has gone through some tensions after the opposition leader Ousman Sonko was condemned to two years in prison for corruption of the youth. This has since then seen many youths go out to the street to protest.
Dakar was calm on Monday after some time of tension when the opposition leader was handed a two-year jail term. The Senegalese capital is still feeling the impact of this unrest.
Few petrol stations remained open after the attacks and others are running low on supply. A passenger said ‘I have visited lots of petrol stations even in villages but many are closed because they were looted by those striking. So I came downtown to fill my tank.
Many banks have remained closed. This has caused many customers to be cued for hours when they find one open. Many have tried many cash points to withdraw money. A customer said in her own words ‘ We cannot feed our children and do anything, it’s really really hard.
.Many big businesses were closed down by this unrest. Markets also were shut down. Many Senegalese wants things should return to normal so they can continue the work.
With the coming our their Religious festivals they want peace to return and many families are counting on their breadwinners and have put much hope on them.
It is not really clear how long the fragile peace will last. The opposition leader Ousmane Sonko remains under house arrest and his supporters say they will fight on until he is released.
