As Cameroon prepares for the October 2025 presidential election, the political spotlight is turning to the Momo Division in the North-West Region. The Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), in power for decades, has made it clear that its main objective is to confirm its dominance in this strategic electoral stronghold.
The Momo Division, which includes subdivisions such as Batibo, Mbengwi, and Widikum, has historically been a crucial battleground. Despite the ongoing sociopolitical tensions in the Anglophone regions, the CPDM has managed to maintain significant support in this area.
Now, with opposition parties striving to strengthen their presence, the CPDM is relying on its grassroots networks and local structures to consolidate its influence. Political meetings, elite mobilizations, and voter outreach campaigns are being intensified to highlight the party’s achievements and rally support for incumbent President Paul Biya, who is running for an unprecedented eighth term at the age of 92.
The opposition, though weakened, is not absent in Momo. The recent disqualification of Maurice Kamto, one of the leading opposition figures, by the Constitutional Council has created a gap that weakens the opposition’s chances of gaining ground.
Parties like the Social Democratic Front (SDF), once dominant in the North-West, are trying to revive their grassroots base. However, internal divisions and the decline of prominent local leaders make it difficult to counter the CPDM’s well-organized campaign machinery.
To maintain its supremacy in the region, the CPDM is deploying several strategies:
With these approaches, and in the absence of some heavyweight opposition candidates, the CPDM is confident of retaining its political dominance in Momo.
The Momo Division is more than just a local battleground. It is a significant electoral reservoir, and whoever controls it gains a valuable advantage in the national outcome. For the CPDM, securing Momo means demonstrating that, despite the Anglophone crisis and political tensions, it still enjoys strong legitimacy in the North-West.
With the presidential election fast approaching, the CPDM is working tirelessly to defend its supremacy in Momo Division. While the opposition struggles to regroup, the balance of power still leans heavily in favor of the ruling party.
